Downgrade of position

A staff have just returned from medical leave due to an accident. The doctor has advised to provide Light Duty Certificate to the employer.

In view of the new development, the staff is downgraded to do another job in the company. With the downgrade of job, his salary is also revised from RM2,400 to RM2,100.

Can the company cut his salary due to the downgrade of the job.

Please advise.

For reason doctor's recommendation  for doing light duty to downgrade an employee, I don't think that is a fair action. Will the company restore his position when he is certifeid fit for normal duty again in furture? Anyway, discuss with the employee about it first.
