Salary Reduction due to poor performance/ attitude/ unreliability

Can I know if it is legal to reduce the salary of comfirmed staffs? How do we go about with this? We would like to demote a staff for bad attitude and unreliability due to high number of sick and late days to work. The reason for the demotion is because we need to employ someone else to take over her responsibilities. She can then be an assistant to the new staff, but can we reduce her pay to an assistant's salary?
