Maternity Leave for husbands

Dear MLL,

I wish to know if there is any "common practise" in the private sector regarding leave for a male employee whose wife has just given birth. Your answer is much valued as I have a staff whose wife (a housewife) has just given birth to a baby boy.

Thank you to those who sent in their opinions. Due to the lack of legislation, I feel that there should be a "common practice" where employers (as well as employees) can refer to. In my view, the number of children should be considered. For the purpose of discussion, I'll scribble a few pointers:

First Child = 4 days

Second Child = 3 days

Third Child = 2 days

Fourth Child & Above = 1 day

Would that be a fair deal for both employer and employee?

Warm regards.

Most probably they will have to take their own leave if the company does not have the practice of giving paternity leave.

Many companies provide Compassionate Leave in the event of death of family members, marriage, wife giving birth etc.
